The problem with campervan internet in New Zealand

Anyone who has toured NZ in a van knows the drill: full bars in Taupō, nothing at the DOC campsite an hour later. Rural cell coverage maps are optimistic, hotspotting drains your phone plan in days, and campground WiFi — where it exists — struggles to load an email. Setting up at camp

1. Park with a reasonably open view of the sky — heavy tree cover is the main enemy.
2. Set the Mini on the roof, a table, or the ground; plug it into 12V power or the battery pack.
3. Connect your devices to the dish's WiFi. That's it — no SIM cards, no aiming, no account setup.

The dish is weather-resistant, but per our rental agreement it needs shelter from rain and must stay clear of salt spray — under an awning or window-side dashboard works well in a drizzle.

How do I power it in the van?

Off the supplied adapter into your house battery/12V system, or the included battery pack. At ~30W it won't flatten a typical house battery overnight if you switch it off while sleeping.

Does it work while driving?

It's designed for stationary use. Set it up at camp; some renters run it on the dash while parked for lunch. In-motion use isn't officially supported on the Mini.

What about my rental van's insurance or roof?

No installation needed — nothing is mounted, drilled, or wired. It just sits wherever there's sky, which also means no arguments with your van hire company.
